Somalia’s Mogadishu Port has emerged as East Africa’s most efficient gateway. This is according to the 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Released on 24 September, the CPPI evaluated 407 global ports, including 47 in Africa, based on the total time vessels spend in port, from arrival at anchorage to departure after loading or unloading cargo.
Mogadishu ranked 163rd globally and first in East Africa, outperforming regional peers such as Berbera (243rd), Dar es Salaam (360th), Djibouti (364th), and Mombasa (375th).

"This achievement demonstrates that a port can compete effectively at regional and global levels, even without the largest infrastructure investments. We are proud to offer shipping lines a reliable gateway and contribute to Somalia’s growing role in regional and international trade," said Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur, Director General of the Mogadishu Port Authority (MPA), in a statement.
CPPI 2024 placed Mogadishu among Africa’s top five performers, alongside Port Said in Egypt (3rd globally), Tanger-Mediterranean in Morocco (5th), Dakar in Senegal (108th), and Toamasina in Madagascar (177th).
