On Monday, September 1, 2025, the General Company for Ports of Iraq announced the successful installation of two modern offshore platforms designed to monitor and manage meteorological and hydrographic conditions, as part of the navigation channel project at Al-Faw Grand Port.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated, “The installation of two advanced offshore platforms has been completed. These platforms are engineered to monitor and manage meteorological and hydrographic conditions to ensure navigational safety, forming a key component of the navigation channel project at Al-Faw Grand Port.”
He explained that, “The platforms constitute a fundamental element of the port’s operational infrastructure. They collect real-time data on tidal movements, ocean currents, wave heights, wind speed and direction, and salinity levels. This data is directly integrated into the port’s central system, enabling precise monitoring and effective planning for vessel entry and departure upon commencement of operations. This capability supports optimal decision-making to ensure the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency for large vessels.”

He added that, “The navigation channel project spans 23 kilometers in length, 200 meters in width, and reaches depths of up to 19.8 meters, with excavation volumes exceeding 58 million cubic meters. The platforms operate in tandem with this major engineering endeavor to provide a continuous monitoring network for meteorological and hydrographic conditions.”
He further noted, “The platforms are not only critical during operational phases; they also supply essential data for maintenance planning, channel expansion, and marine environmental management—enhancing the long-term sustainability and efficiency of port operations.”
The completion of the offshore platform installations within the navigation channel at Al-Faw Grand Port underscores Iraq’s commitment to developing its maritime infrastructure in accordance with the highest international standards. It strengthens the port’s readiness to safely and efficiently accommodate mega vessels upon launch. Moreover, the platforms provide vital data for monitoring environmental and navigational conditions, enabling sustainable planning for maintenance and marine ecosystem management. This project represents a strategic cornerstone in elevating Iraq’s position within regional maritime trade.
