Egypt is preparing for a new phase of revitalizing the gas sector, with the arrival of a giant drilling ship in the Mediterranean Sea, and the start of boosting local production and reducing dependence on imports, especially in light of the increasing global challenges in energy markets.
According to a statement obtained by the specialized energy platform (based in Washington), the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, Engineer Karim Badawi, inspected on Saturday, March 28, 2026, the "Valaris DS 12" vessel, which arrived in Egypt to begin a program to drill 5 new natural gas wells.
This step comes as part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ plan to intensify exploration and production activities; the modern drilling vessel represents a qualitative addition to Egypt’s operational capabilities in deep waters, in cooperation with international partners seeking to expand their work in the region.
The ministry confirmed that the new drilling program reflects the government’s commitment to supporting foreign investments, as the offshore unit will contribute to accelerating the development of existing fields and opening new horizons for discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The drilling vessel Valaris DS 12
The drilling vessel "Valaris DS 12" is one of the most modern marine units in the world; it is an advanced drilling vessel specifically designed to work in very deep waters, making it a crucial element in Egypt's exploration and production plans.
The ship belongs to the Valaris global fleet, is about 238 meters long, with a width exceeding 42 meters, and has advanced operational capabilities that allow it to operate efficiently in great sea depths.
The drilling vessel is targeting the drilling of the "Fium 4", "Gharab" and "Rw" wells for the British drilling company "BP", in addition to the "Atoll West" and "Nofret" wells for the company "Archius Energy", according to what the specialized energy platform reviewed.
The giant vessel "Valaris DS 12" features a Dynamic Positioning (DP) system that allows it to maintain its position with high accuracy without the need for anchors, along with a twin drilling derrick that enhances operational efficiency and reduces execution time.
The advanced technical capabilities of the drilling vessel reflect its potential to carry out complex operations in challenging marine environments, which enhances the chances of making new discoveries that support Egypt’s natural gas reserves.
Plans to increase gas production in Egypt
This campaign is part of a broader strategy to increase domestic production; the drilling vessel contributes to reducing the gap between supply and demand, especially with the increasing consumption of gas to generate electricity during peak summer times.
Production from the Fayoum 4 well is planned to begin next July at a rate of up to about 100 million cubic feet per day, boosting local supplies and easing pressure on LNG imports.
The minister praised the activity of the British drilling company BP as one of the largest investors in the natural gas sector in Egypt, stressing that the company continues to implement an ambitious expansion program in offshore concession areas.
The company also plans to inject new investments estimated at about $1.5 billion during the 2026/2027 fiscal year, in the areas of exploration and field development, in order to support the sustainability of production and increase reserves.
In the same context, Archeos Energy confirmed its commitment to strengthening its presence in Egypt, as the current drilling vessel operations represent a starting point for an expansion plan aimed at doubling production in the Eastern Mediterranean in the coming years.
