Amid recent media reports suggesting that Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) plans to suspend new LNG carrier orders from Chinese shipyards, the company has issued a clarification emphasizing its commitment to prudent decision-making in light of current geopolitical developments.
MOL reaffirmed that, as a leading global LNG transportation operator, it recognizes the essential role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in supporting the transition to a decarbonized society. Ensuring a stable and secure LNG transportation infrastructure remains central to MOL’s mission of maintaining reliable energy supplies to Japan and the broader global market.
The company noted that only a limited number of shipyards worldwide possess the technical capability to construct high-quality LNG carriers. In this context, Chinese shipyards remain important partners, offering diversity and flexibility in procurement. MOL acknowledged that while some shipping companies have recently been cautious due to considerations such as potential additional port fees for Chinese-built vessels in the U.S., orders from Chinese yards have historically been based on customer requirements and individual company discretion.
Going forward, MOL stated that it will continue to assess the use of Chinese shipyards that meet its rigorous quality and safety standards, alongside trusted South Korean shipyards, while closely monitoring future U.S. policy trends and broader geopolitical risks. This balanced approach aims to ensure MOL can effectively support the global demand for LNG transport and uphold its responsibility in delivering energy security.
