Maersk welcomes fourth methanol-fueled container ship
A.P. Møller-Mærsk has officially added the fourth large methanol dual-fuel container vessel to its fleet, with the christening of Alette Mærsk.
The vessel was named in a ceremony at the Port of Los Angeles, with renowned snowboarder and two-time Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim serving as the godmother. Vincent Clerc, Maersk CEO, emphasized the immense challenges facing the shipping industry, highlighting its vast and complex nature, which makes decarbonization particularly difficult.

He also acknowledged that the new series of dual-fuel vessels represents a step forward but is not a sustainable long-term solution. Clerc stressed the need for immediate, coordinated action across industries and pointed to the company’s goal of transporting 25% of its ocean cargo using low-emissions fuel by 2030. However, he noted that achieving this target would require systemic change, including the urgent need for regulation to make green fuels viable and affordable.
