Japanese-designed ship to transport surplus electricity in containerised batteries
Japanese technology company PowerX has unveiled the detailed design of a new cargo ship equipped for storing and transporting surplus electricity generated from renewable sources.
The vessel is scheduled for completion in 2025 with domestic and international field testing set to commence the following year.

The vessel itself will have a length of 140 metres, an electric propulsion system, and space for 96 containerised marine batteries, providing a total capacity of 241 MWh.
PowerX added that a new company called Ocean Power Grid will be established in the third quarter of 2023. This company will be responsible for owning, selling, and operating electricity transport ships both in Japan and abroad.
