LR focuses on upcoming IMO and ILO requirements
Lloyd’s Register published a report earlier this week that evaluates upcoming changes to mandatory statutory regulations and instruments.
The report includes IMO (International Maritime Organization) and ILO (International Labor Organization) requirements that have already entered into force as well as those are still under discussion that have not been adopted. Major developments in legislation are summed up in the report as follows:
New approvals or adoptions:
- IMO has adopted the new SOLAS Chapter XV and mandatory Code addressing safety standards for the carriage of more than 12 industrial personnel (IP Code).
- Amendments to MARPOL VI, to include a Mediterranean Sea SOx Emission Control Area (ECA) were adopted.
- Draft amendments to the LSA Code and 81(70) on a revised recommendation on the testing of life-saving appliances for the ventilation of totally enclosed lifeboats have been agreed.
Significant new items being considered or milestones in ongoing developments:
- The revision of IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy will be considered at MEPC 80 in summer

IMO agreed to the development of a non-mandatory goal-based maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, which will become effective from 2024, as an interim measure prior to the adoption of a mandatory code, expected to enter force 1 January 2028
