The Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Shanghai renewed the Memorandum of Understanding to further strengthen the sister port relationship.

The Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Shanghai have had a sister port relationship since 2005. The two ports have been cooperating for years in port planning, management, environment and efficiency.

The ports have agreed to further expand their sister port relationship and pragmatic cooperation on environmental protection and making port processes more efficient.

The two ports signed the MoU during the North Bund Forum 2022 in Shanghai. The opening ceremony of the forum was attended and opened by Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining. Chinese Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng and his Dutch counterpart Mark Harbers, Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, both delivered a video address during the opening ceremony.

In the subsequent session on expanding international cooperation, Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and Yu Fulin, director general of the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, signed a Memorandum of Understanding online for further strengthening sister port relations.

Earlier in December, CMA CGM and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) signed a strategic collaboration to develop onshore power supply for containerships at the Port of Shanghai.

Starting December 15, all fully-fitted CMA CGM containerships calling at the port of Shanghai will be able to use the onshore power connection.

CMA CGM’s newbuilds are equipped with the technology required to use cold ironing. The company is also conducting an extensive retrofitting program so other containerships can also use an onshore power supply.

By the end of 2022, 13 CMA CGM vessels calling at the port of Shanghai will be connecting to the onshore power supply, and by mid-2023, this number will reach 50.
