First, a fully electric RO-Pax ferry in Greece to be designed and developed by C-Job
The Netherlands-based ship design and engineering company has been contracted by Greek ferry operator Saronic Ferries to design and develop the first fully electric Ro-Pax ferry in Greece. The vessel is expected to come into service by 2026 and sail between Piraeus and the islands of Aegina and Agistri.
The electric ferry is part of Saronic Ferries’ effort to become emission-free by 2040. This new vessel is expected to be 279 feet long and has a width of 52 feet. It will have a capacity to house 800 passengers and a combination of six trucks and 55 cars. The all-electric propulsion system will have a top speed of up to 14.5 knots. The vessel will also feature state-of-the-art energy-saving solutions, which will be integrated onto the ship at no cost to the comfort of the passengers. C-Job has disclosed that the design they have presented has been formulated after conducting an extensive study regarding the feasibility of sustainable fuels.
The vessel is to recharge in the port of Piraeus. Hence, the vessel's entry into service is contingent on the recharging infrastructure developed by 2026 in the port of Piraeus.
