The prominent Greek shipowner confirmed to Riviera an order for two LR2 tankers at Hengli Heavy Industries, with deliveries scheduled for Q1-Q2 2027.
Laskaridis Maritime and Hengli share a growing partnership. About a month ago, the two sides concluded a contract for two VLCC newbuildings, also set for delivery through Q1 2027.
The Greek owner has been attracted by the early delivery positions offered by the Chinese yard, currently building 10 Kamsarmax bulk carriers for the group, some of which have already been delivered.
With the latest contract, Laskaridis Maritime’s tanker orderbook rises to 10 vessels: five MR2s, three LR2s and two VLCCs.
Part of the Alimia Group, Alimia Shipping Ltd and Laskaridis Maritime have been active players in the newbuilding market, steadily expanding the group’s fleet – both active and under construction – to 38 vessels – 28 bulk carriers and 10 tankers – including the latest orders.
LR2 orders remain subdued
The wave of LR2 newbuilding activity seen among Greek owners over the past two years has eased notably in 2025. According to Xclusiv Shipbrokers, Greek owners ordered only two LR2 tankers from January to October this year, compared with 26 LR2 contracts in 2024.
As of the end of October, LR2s accounted for roughly 22% of the Greek tanker orderbook, Xclusiv data shows.
Hengli Heavy Industries has emerged as the primary recipient of Greek newbuilding orders in recent months, particularly for tankers and bulk carriers.
