Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Indian Ship Technology Centre (ISTC) in Visakhapatnam on 26 September, marking a step toward reducing India’s reliance on foreign ship designs and strengthening its position in global shipbuilding.
Launched during the 10th convocation of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Chennai, the ISTC, located at IMU’s Visakhapatnam campus, will serve as a hub for indigenous ship design, research, training and policy support. Furthermore, it is equipped with advanced software and design tools and aims to act as a single-window service for consultancy and collaboration with industry.“The country is embarking on a new era of maritime excellence” said Sonowal, referring to the government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to position India among the world’s top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030.

The launch underscores India’s efforts to revamp its shipbuilding ecosystem through strategic investment and innovation, addressing long-standing challenges such as limited domestic design capabilities and dependence on foreign expertise.
