The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has published its Monthly Piracy Report for the month of August 2025.
Three acts of piracy and armed robbery were attempted against ships during the month of August 2025 and reported by Member States or international organizations in consultative status.
The incidents include:
- Name Withheld (Product tanker, Malta)
The incident: The duty crew onboard the drifting tanker spotted a skiff approaching and alerted the Master. The crew mustered in the citadel as a precaution. The skiff came alongside the tanker, prompting the Master to contact the Owners and the Togo Navy for assistance. A Togo Navy patrol boat arrived, boarded the tanker, and ensured the safety of all crewmembers. The tanker, with no material damage, proceeded to Lome port anchorage for further investigation by the Togo Authorities.
Response: Ghana PRC relayed the message to MRCC Ghana, Ghana Navy & Togo Navy. (IMBKL)
Location: Around 46nm SE of Anloga, Ghana Ghana 001° 22.92′ E
- HK Tug 8/LKH 2882 (Tug, Singapore)
The incident: While the tug boat towing a barge loaded with scrap metal was underway, 10 perpetrators in nine sampans came alongside the barge and removed some scrap metal from the deck of the barge. The crew was not injured. At the time of the incident, HK Tug 8 was towing barge LKH 2882 loaded with scrap metal from Singapore to Phu My, Vietnam.
Response: The master reported the incident to Singapore Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) East.
Location: Approximately 3 nm off Pulau Nongsa (Indonesia), in the eastbound lane of the TSS Indonesia 01° 14.18′ N 104° 02.30′ E
- Georgitsi (Bulk carrier, Marshall Islands)
The incident: While underway, three unarmed perpetrators were sighted in the engine room. The ship’s general alarm was activated and the crew mustered. The perpetrators escaped upon being discovered. A security search was conducted, with no perpetrators found onboard and nothing was stolen. All crew members were accounted for, with no injury reported.
Response: The incident was reported to Singapore Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) West.
