Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, conducted a field inspection and on-site meeting at the immersed tunnel project, one of the key components of Al Faw Grand Port. The visit, attended by department heads and executive officials, focused on reviewing progress, monitoring completion rates, and planning the upcoming operational phases of the project.
“The immersed tunnel is one of the strategic infrastructure projects within Al Faw Grand Port. It is being implemented according to the highest international technical standards under the supervision of international consultants from the Italian company Technital,” Dr. Al-Fartousi stated.
He explained that the inspection is part of a rigorous follow-up process to ensure safety and quality standards across all aspects of the project. “This is especially important following the commencement of installation of the advanced ventilation system (Jet Fan), among the latest technologies used globally in immersed tunnels. The project has also reached advanced stages in the grouting and submersion of the ten concrete segments that constitute the tunnel,” he added.
During the on-site meeting, the Director General emphasized the importance of coordination between engineering and technical teams to ensure readiness for the project’s final phase. “Effective management and continuous field follow-up are essential to the success of major projects at Al Faw Grand Port. The meeting also served as a platform to review work progress, set priorities, and outline future strategies to ensure adherence to planned timelines and the application of the highest standards of quality and safety,” he noted.
Dr. Al-Fartousi highlighted the strategic significance of the project, stating, “The immersed tunnel represents a vital axis in the integrated transportation system of Al Faw Grand Port and contributes to facilitating the movement of goods between Iraqi ports and regional highway networks.”
As the first immersed tunnel of its kind in the Middle East, the project marks a major engineering milestone in Iraq’s maritime infrastructure, reinforcing Al Faw Grand Port’s position as a regional hub for maritime transport and trade.
