The proposed combination brings together two complementary shipping companies with strong track records in their respective markets. Vertom, with a modern fleet of over 80 vessels and a leading position in short sea shipping, and UAL, a specialist in transatlantic and West Africa trade lanes with deep roots in the Oil & Gas logistics sector, aim to leverage their combined networks, expertise and fleet capabilities.
Under the intended structure, both companies will continue to operate under their own names and retain their individual identities. At the same time, Vertom and UAL will actively explore opportunities to collaborate across their networks, services and customer base.
By combining strengths, the parties expect to enhance their service offering across key routes connecting Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S. Gulf, South America, West Africa and East Africa, while also building on UAL’s intra-African and Caribbean services. The proposed combination creates opportunities to optimize fleet deployment, expand market access and further support customers with integrated logistics solutions, including breakbulk, container and project cargo.
“This combination brings together two companies with highly complementary strengths, particularly in our liner services,” said Arjan de Jong, CEO of Vertom. “By combining our fleets, networks and expertise, we are creating a stronger, more competitive platform that enhances our market position and broadens our service offering. At the same time, we are securing long-term continuity for the business and strengthening our ability to support customers across a wider range of markets and services.”
Roger Jungblut, CEO of UAL, added, “We see strong alignment between our organizations, not only in terms of services and markets, but also in mindset. By bringing together our experience in complex logistics and challenging regions, we create opportunities to learn from one another, strengthen our capabilities and continue delivering reliable solutions to customers and partners.”
The strategic combination is currently in a preparatory phase. Subject to the completion of the necessary procedures and approvals, it is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2026.
