Spain’s maritime port sector is facing a generational shift over the next five years, and according to the sector report entitled “The Competency Challenge in Spanish Ports,” prepared by the consulting firm Ocean Capital Partners, the port system will need to recruit between 12,000 and 17,000 new employees to compensate for the huge shortage of workers who will reach retirement age, according to Spanish media .
She added that the replacement process will not be linear, as it coincides with a structural shift in the logistics business model, noting that the digitization of port terminals and the transition to green energy will lead to a shift in demand from traditional jobs towards highly skilled technological specialists.
The same sources explained that the modernization of maritime routes and the application of unified information systems in the European Union will lead to the emergence of a “skills gap”, highlighting that the Spanish port sector, coordinated by the state port authority, is preparing to face a new transitional phase during which continuous training will be the key to avoiding a collapse in the generational transition process in this sector.
