In the context of the POSIDONIA 2026 International Exhibition, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed today, June 2, 2026, between Skaramanga Shipyards, which was represented by Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Vice President and CEO, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd, which was represented by Mr. Kim Jae Rak, Senior Vice President, in the presence of the Greek Government represented by the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Stefanos Gikas, and the Republic of Korea represented by His Excellency the Ambassador to Greece Ju-seong LIM, who warmly welcomed this initiative.
The Memorandum concerns cooperation with the aim of jointly building surface vessels for the needs of the navy and the coast guard, which will be addressed to the entire European market.
In their joint statements, Mr. Varvitisotis stressed, among other things, "the importance of the strategic cooperation of the largest shipyard in the world with the largest shipyard in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean, which was achieved in just two years from the resumption of operation of the Skaramanga Shipyards", while he warmly thanked the two governments, of Greece and the Republic of Korea "which facilitated and provided active support to this project".
For his part, Mr. Jae Rak pointed out that "at the beginning of its business activity in the shipbuilding sector, Hyundai Heavy Industries was supported by Greek shipowners and with this support, which continues to this day, it has reached today the largest private shipyard in the world. This trust turned into friendship and with the Memorandum of Cooperation with Skaramanga Shipyards, the foundations were laid for the long-term cooperation not only for the Greek market but also for the expansion of cooperation in the EU market and beyond."
