The General Authority of Ports (Mawani) revealed that the total tonnage handled during the past month of April exceeded 14.5 million tons, a decrease of 34.5 percent, compared to 22.2 million in the same period of the previous year, while the total general cargo amounted to 514,243 tons, liquid bulk cargo to 23.4 million, and solid bulk cargo to more than 2.8 million tons.
According to a statement issued by “Ports” on Sunday, the number of containers handled decreased by 18.6 percent to reach 508.8 thousand standard containers, compared to 625.4 thousand containers on an annual basis.
The total number of incoming containers decreased by 9.9 percent to 233,500 TEUs, compared to 259,400. The total number of outgoing containers also decreased by 37.8 percent to 145,100 TEUs, compared to 233,700 TEUs.
Transshipment containers fell by 1.6 percent to 130,000 containers, compared to about 132,200 last year.
In contrast, passenger numbers fell by 34.2 percent to 70.7 thousand passengers, compared to 107.6 thousand passengers last year, and the number of ships fell by 14 percent to 1,192 ships, compared to 1,386 ships in the same period last year.
