Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and A.P. Moller-Maersk have been showing increasingly divergent market share trajectories, Alphaliner highlighted.
According to Alphaliner data, MSC has continued its rapid expansion, reaching a record 21.5% share of global container shipping capacity. This marks the highest level ever recorded by any carrier, with the operator extending its lead after years of aggressive fleet growth since 2020.Furthermore, MSC has effectively doubled its market share since 2010, further widening the gap with its closest competitors.
By contrast, Maersk has seen its market share fall to 13.7% in May, its lowest level in two decades.
To remind, in April, MSC announced a major leadership transition, confirming that ownership of the company was transferred in the final quarter of 2025 from its founder, Gianluigi Aponte, to his children, Diego Aponte and Alexa Aponte. The announcement came as the carrier also reached a milestone, operating a fleet of around 1,000 vessels.
The decline reflects both the carrier’s decision to cap fleet growth at 4.1–4.3 million TEU from 2024 and the continued expansion of the global container fleet. The Danish group has focused its strategy on fleet decarbonisation and integrated logistics services.
Elsewhere among the major carriers, CMA CGM maintained a relatively stable position, holding a 12.5% share of global capacity, slightly below its 2023 peak of 12.9%.
