The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Mumbai, under India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has granted official approval to Dubai-based Islamic P&I Club to act as a Non-International Group (Non-IG) Protection & Indemnity insurer for vessels navigating Indian waters.
The authorization remains effective until 19 February 2027 in accordance with the Merchant Shipping (Regulation of Entry of Ships into Ports, Anchorages and Offshore Facilities) Rules, 2012.
The recognition marks another strategic step for Islamic P&I Club as it continues to expand its footprint across key maritime markets while supporting shipowners with compliant insurance solutions aligned with international maritime requirements.

As outlined in the approval issued on 10 April 2026, Islamic P&I Club has been classified under Insurer Category II, enabling vessels covered by the Club to enter and operate within Indian waters, provided all regulatory obligations set by Indian authorities are fulfilled.
Under the approval terms, the Club must ensure that insured vessels maintain valid statutory and classification certificates throughout their operations or transit in Indian waters. Additional requirements include the submission of audited financial statements and claims history records on an annual basis, alongside maintaining digital verification systems for certificates of entry and blue cards.
Commenting on the development, Mohamad Renno, Regional Manager at Islamic P&I Club, stated: “The approval granted by the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, authorizing Islamic Protection & Indemnity Club, Dubai to operate as a Non-IG P&I insurer in Indian waters until February 2027 represents a significant milestone. It reflects regulatory confidence in the Club’s compliance framework, financial strength, and operational capability. This development strengthens the Club’s position within the maritime insurance sector and reinforces its role in supporting compliant and secure vessel operations in India, subject to ongoing regulatory requirements and oversight.”
