The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will hold an extraordinary session of its Council to address the implications for shipping and seafarers of the situation in the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman and the Gulf region, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The session will be held from 18 to 19 March 2026 at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization in London, United Kingdom, chaired by Mr. Victor Jimenez of Spain.
The extraordinary session (C/ES.36) is being held at the request of several members of the Council.
The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, held briefings with industry organizations (March 11) and member states (March 12) to exchange information and discuss recent developments.
The Council is the executive body of the International Maritime Organization, and it consists of 40 member states elected by the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization
