The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has issued a statement through its spokesperson regarding the Oman Notice to Mariners and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) evacuation plan.
“The priority remains the safe evacuation of the 11,000 seafarers who have been stranded in the region since the end of February,” he adds.
He stresses that achieving this objective will require coordinated action between the International Maritime Organization (IMO), states in the region, and, crucially, the shipping industry.
“In this context, the IMO evacuation plan is a welcome development as it strengthens coordination efforts and supports the restoration of freedom of navigation,” he notes. “It is essential that this plan operates in harmony, rather than in conflict, with existing mechanisms already in place.”
Looking ahead, he adds that the ICS will continue to work closely with the IMO and industry partners to ensure the safety and security of shipping seeking to exit the region.
