Hanse Bereederung is marking its 50th anniversary as a chartering and Sale & Purchase specialist, recognising five decades of commercial expertise, client service and long-standing relationships across shipping markets.
Originally established to manage smaller multipurpose vessels, Hanse Bereederung has grown into a market leader in container feeder vessels and is trusted by partners around the world. The company now provides chartering, Sale & Purchase, operations and pool management services, working with a fleet of approximately 50 vessels. Its current activities reflect a broader market position than in its early years, with the majority of the fleet now made up of multipurpose vessels operated by Australia Asia Line, while Hanse also controls about 20 container vessels and is active in bulk carrier chartering, including Kamsarmax vessels.
The next phase will focus on expanding Sale & Purchase activities, strengthening Hanse Bereederung’s presence in Asia, attracting new clients and reinforcing its position as a leading specialist broker, supported by the international reach and resources of the Columbia Group.
Founded in 1976, Hanse Bereederung has been shaped by several major milestones, including Mr Heinrich Schoeller’s acquisition of 50% of the company in 1982 and his later acquisition of the remaining shares. That relationship gave Hanse Bereederung a long-term connection to Schoeller-controlled tonnage and laid the foundations for its later integration into the Columbia Group. In 1986, the company expanded its in-house chartering activities and concluded its first fixture for Bengal Tiger Line, fixing the MV Auriga for voyages between Singapore and India, a deal that marked the start of a long-standing commercial relationship.
Michael Zankl, Managing Director of Hanse Bereederung
Michael Zankl, Managing Director of Chartering / S&P, Hanse Bereederung, said: “Fifty years is an important milestone, but our focus is on the next stage of the business. Hanse Bereederung has remained a compact team, yet it has built a broad market presence across chartering, S&P, operations and pool management. We see further potential in Sale & Purchase and in expanding our presence in Asia, while retaining the personal approach and short decision-making lines our customers value.”
Andreas Hadjipetrou, CEO of Columbia Group
Andreas Hadjipetrou, Chief Executive Officer, Columbia Group, said: “Hanse Bereederung’s 50th anniversary is a proud moment for the Columbia Group and a tribute to the expertise, loyalty and customer focus that have shaped the company over many decades. We are pleased to support Michael, Claudia and the team as they continue to grow the business, expand their S&P activities and strengthen their position in the market.”
