Authorities temporarily closed the port of Casablanca after containers fell from the Liberian flagged cargo vessel IONIKOS into the harbor basin, according to a notice issued by the port captain and seen by local media.
The containers, which held food products and manufactured goods, dropped into the port waters, prompting officials to suspend port operations and vessel traffic from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, until further notice.
In the notice addressed to importers, exporters, shipping and logistics operators, the port captain said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard people, ships, cargo and the marine environment, and to prevent disruption to port operations. The document carried the endorsement of the National Ports Agency.
The incident marks the latest disruption affecting major Moroccan ports in recent weeks. Adverse weather and rough sea conditions have already slowed cargo handling at Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar, including shipments of grain and fuel, adding pressure to logistics chains.
