As part of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk’s (PTVI) commitment to responsible and sustainable mining, the Company continues to advance environmental and operational excellence across its value chain, including nickel logistics and shipping activities. A key focus of these efforts is Balantang Port, a dedicated terminal that supports the handling of logistics and the shipment of nickel products.
In recognition of its success in integrating environmentally responsible initiatives with digitally enabled operations, Balantang Port has been awarded a Four-Star Rating (Level III) in the 2025 Green and Smart Port Assessment—the first time the facility has achieved this distinction.
The Green and Smart Port Initiatives ASRI 2026 Award is the result of a strategic collaboration between Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs and IDSurvey to accelerate the transformation of port management practices across the country. The award was presented directly by Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, to PTVI’s Head of Energy & Logistics Operations, Dahlan, during an official ceremony held in Gresik, East Java, on 15 July 2026.
The event was also attended by several senior government officials, including Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, and Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Yandri Susanto, who jointly recognized companies demonstrating excellence in green and smart port development.
In his keynote remarks, Zulkifli Hasan highlighted the Indonesian government’s ambition to modernize national port infrastructure while ensuring environmental stewardship.
“The President has directed that Indonesia’s ports become more efficient, modern, and environmentally responsible. Advanced ports must not only strengthen national logistics performance but also uphold sustainability principles,” he said.
According to Dahlan, Balantang Port has implemented a broad range of green and smart port initiatives encompassing management systems, environmental performance, and digital transformation.
“These efforts reflect our commitment to responsible mining practices while supporting the development of more environmentally friendly and technology-driven port operations,” said Dahlan.
The assessment was conducted based on the Green Port Guidelines 3.0/2023, Indonesia’s benchmark framework for sustainable port management and performance evaluation. The framework allocates 80 percent of its assessment score to environmental sustainability criteria (Green Port) and 20 percent to technology and digitalization criteria (Smart Port).
For PTVI, participation in the assessment represents an important opportunity to demonstrate the Company’s commitment to high standards of port governance, safety, operational excellence, and accountability.
“This process has also provided valuable opportunities to benchmark our performance and share best practices while measuring the effectiveness of the green and smart port principles we have implemented over the years,” Dahlan added.
Looking ahead, PTVI remains committed to further strengthening the implementation of green port principles at Balantang Port. The Company expects these initiatives to deliver not only greater operational efficiency but also long-term benefits for the environment and surrounding communities.
Beyond the award itself, the recognition acknowledges the port’s ongoing efforts to advance sustainable management practices, including biodiversity conservation, the adoption of renewable energy solutions, and the integration of real-time operational systems.
The achievement also reflects PTVI’s CARES values, particularly Excellence, which encourages continuous improvement through collaboration, innovation, and process simplification to support sustainable growth.
Dahlan concluded: “For us, there is no future without mining, and there can be no mining without caring about the future."
