The Mediterranean Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Med MoU) is pleased to announce the formal acceptance of the French Republic as its newest member. The decision was ratified during the 27th Committee Session of the Med MoU, held from 21 to 23 October 2025 in Kalkara, Malta. The accession was formally signed during the session, with membership set to become effective on 1 January 2026.
This landmark membership marks a significant step forward in enhancing cooperation and harmonizing port State control (PSC) practices across the Mediterranean region. France, with its extensive coastline and major ports on the Mediterranean Sea, brings considerable expertise and a strong commitment to maritime safety, pollution prevention, and seafarer welfare.
"We extend a warm welcome to France as a full member of the Mediterranean MoU," said Rear Admiral Reda Ismail, Secretary General of the Med MoU. "France's membership is a testament to our shared commitment to safeguarding our shared marine environment and ensuring the highest standards of maritime safety. Their proven expertise and active contribution will be invaluable in fostering closer cooperation and raising the overall effectiveness of our regional PSC regime.“
The French administration has expressed its honour in joining the Memorandum and looks forward to collaborating with fellow member states to work towards the global harmonization of PSC practices while respecting the specific characteristics of the Mediterranean region.
